The international break is over and club football returns to stadiums. French Ligue 1 will start its fifth round on Friday evening with Lorient hosting the reigning champions from Lille.

Basic information, news and team form

Lorient was considered one of the relegation candidates before the season, but their performances in the opening rounds didn't confirm it at all. Although Les Merluts started with a rather difficult draw, they recorded only one loss in four games in August (1:3 at Montpellier). Draws at Saint-Étienne and Lens are not bad results at all, while the 1-0 home win over Monaco was downright sensational. Lorient had a good start to the season and will be looking to build on it against Lille. 

The defending champions, on the other hand, have not made a convincing start to the new season. Even with a changed squad and a new manager, Lille managed to beat PSG 1-0 in the Super Cup, but it was a struggle from the start on the league stage. In the first round LOSC salvaged a 3-3 draw at Metz in the final seconds, a week later they were beaten 0-4 at home by Nice and in the third round they only drew 1-1 at Saint-Étienne. Yilmaz and his teammates got their first league win at the end of August when they beat Montpellier 2-1 at home.

The matches of both teams this year have been goal-rich. Lorient have kept only one clean sheet from four attempts, but have managed to score in all their games. Lille are still waiting for their first clean sheet, but they have scored a solid six goals. Will these streaks continue after Friday's match? Lorient manager Christophe Pélissier should have almost the entire squad at his disposal, with only centre-back Morel missing. On the Lille side, Sanches, Bamba and Weah have injury problems, so their start in Friday's game is uncertain. Gabriel Gudmundsson, who joined LOSC just before the transfer deadline, could make his debut.
