The ninth round of Ligue 1 will conclude on Sunday evening with the heated derby between Saint-Etienne and Lyon. The two rivals will go into the match in completely different form. While ASSE are in a deep crisis, OL are finally starting to live up to the high expectations.

Basic information, news and team form

Saint-Etienne is the most successful French team in history with ten league titles, but this year the traditional club has been drowning in relegation waters since the beginning of the season. ASSE has not won once in eight rounds, has scored only seven goals and is in last place of the table. In the opening three rounds, Les Verts at least picked up points for draws, but since the end of August, defeat has followed defeat. ASSE currently have five in a row, the last of which came last weekend at home to Nice (0:3). Manager Puel is under a lot of pressure and if his team can't even make it through the derby, his stay at the club will be very uncertain. 

Lyon didn't have a very convincing start to the season either, but unlike their main rivals, they managed to recover. The recent results of Les Gones have been mainly marked by wins, of which Lyon have collected five in the last seven games. The only loss came in a league game at PSG, but OL put in a great performance and were close to at least a point. Lyon also lost points last weekend at home to Lorient (1-1), but the match was significantly affected by an early red card for defender Emerson. On Thursday, Lyon returned to their winning ways against Brondby, who they thrashed 3-0 in the Europa League. 

 

Betdoin's view of the match 

The derby is always a big game for both teams, but the home side will be under a lot of pressure as they desperately need a point. But Betdoin's algorithm doesn't trust them and predicts a Lyon win. For example, the system recommends over 1.5 goals scored by the visitors as a value bet, a very likely scenario given the leaky home defence.

The home team will have goalkeeper Green back after the expiration of his suspension, while defenders Moueffek and Macon will be missing. Lyon will have to do without the suspended Emerson and the injured Dembele, while Denayer, Boateng and Slimani are uncertain.
