Manchester United and Leeds United will face each other in the top flight of the English competition for the first time since the 1970-71 season. This match ended with the visitors winning 0:1 at Old Trafford after Mick Jones' goal at the same time the visitors finished second in the league.

Manchester United fans were unable to be there for last season's shootout with Leeds at Old Trafford, which ended 6-2 and was played behind closed doors due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. The pre-season game against Everton, in which the Red Devils won 4-0, was watched by 55,000 spectators and a full house is also expected for the Leeds game. Fans are likely to enjoy the debuts of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, who have become the latest signings of the Manchester outfit.

Leeds United ended last season with a run of four consecutive wins in the Premier League, only Arsenal and Liverpool had longer winning streaks at the end of the campaign (both teams had five). Fans of the Whites can be encouraged by the news that United won't have the best possible line-up available. While Jadon Sancho has already arrived for his first training sessions this week and is starting to gel with his teammates, his presence in the starting lineup is rather unrealistic. The world-famous goalscorer Edinson Cavani will be absent due to an extended holiday and subsequent necessary quarantine. Alex Telles will be unavailable until the end of September due to an ankle injury and Marcus Rashford underwent shoulder surgery during this week and is slowly recovering from his injury. The doubtful players remain Dean Henderson, who despite a great performance in the second half of last season contracted Covid in pre-season and is undergoing home treatment. The same goes for Jesse Lingard who, after a successful loan spell at West Ham, also missed the pre-season due to Covid.

Marcelo Bielsa admitted at his last press conference that Kalvin Phillips may not be fit enough to start in Leeds' opening game after his late return to pre-season training. Barcelona summer signing Junior Firpo and Diego Llorente are unlikely to recover from their injuries in time and especially the absence of the former could be a big problem given the loss of Ezgjan Alioski, the left-back may have to be replaced by Stuart Dallas.
