Lille vs Lyon: Preview, Free tip & Prediction

The busy Sunday schedule of the French Ligue 1 will open shortly after lunch with Lille vs Lyon. While last season both teams were at the top of the league, this year they are struggling in the second half of the table. 

Basic information, news and team form

Few people expected Lille to defend their championship title, but Les Dogues' league performances so far have been disappointing. LOSC are only 11th in the table after 17 rounds played and the gap to the leader PSG is huge. Lille's start to the season in particular has not gone well at all, but their performances on the league scene have improved recently. Manager Gourvennec's charges have not lost for five rounds in a row, and they have full points from their last two games, winning 2-1 at Rennes and then beating Troyes at home by the same score. Lille also managed to use their growing form in the Champions League group stage. In Wednesday's match, Les Dogues won 3-1 at Wolfsburg and surprisingly made it to the Round of 16, coming straight from first place in a difficult group. 

While Lille's form has been on an upward trend in recent weeks, it has been the opposite for Lyon. After the 1:4 debacle at Rennes in the beginning of November and the suspended derby against Marseille, they won 1:0 at Montpellier, but the last two rounds have again produced miserable results. First, Lyon fell sensationally at home to Reims 1:2, despite dominating for most of the game, and then last weekend they drew 2:2 at a struggling Bordeaux. In both games Les Gones suffered from a large number of defensive errors that have been with them all season. Even Thursday's Europa League match against Rangers (1-1) was not without them, but Lyon fielded a significantly weakened eleven given their certain first place in the group. 

 

 

Betdoin's view of the match 

While Lille boast one of the best defences in the league, Lyon are at the bottom of the table in defensive statistics. Up front, however, the visitors have a lot of strength: OL have played 22 games in all competitions this season and have failed to score in only one of them. It is no surprise that Betdoin's algorithm has marked a bet on BTS as one of the value picks for Sunday's game. 

 

 

Absentees and estimated line-ups 

The home team will miss the suspended defender Reinildo, while winger Weah will probably not play as well. Lyon will not be helped by injured defenders Denayer and Diomandé, while Paqueta will not play due to a suspension. A question mark hangs over the start of Toko Ekambi, who got injured against Rangers.
