Montpellier and Marseille will be the last two teams to enter the new Ligue 1 season as their clash will conclude the opening round programme on Sunday evening. Both teams finished in the top 10 last season, but Marseille had more reasons to celebrate, having secured a Europa League group thanks to their 5th place finish. 

 

Background information, news and team form

Montpellier did not experience a bad season last year, the final 8th place can be considered a solid result in a tough competition. Despite this, there were significant changes at MHSC after the season: long-time manager Der Zakarian left and was replaced with former Brest coach Olivier Dall'Oglio, legendary centre-back Hilton hung up his cleats and the club was reinforced by Premier League and French national team veteran Mamadou Sakho. 

If Montpellier underwent changes over the summer, Marseille has undergone an earthquake. OM had already experienced a managerial change in the spring, when Sampaoli joined the team, but after the end of the season, it was time to adjust the playing squad.
