A six-pointer between two traditional French clubs is scheduled on Saturday night in Ligue 1. Saint-Étienne and Bordeaux have 14 league titles between them, but both are currently threatened by relegation.

Basic information, news and team form

Saint-Étienne finished 11th last season, but were only six points away from the 18th place which means a relegation play-off. The squad has seen only slight changes over the summer due to limited finances and manager Claude Puel has to rely mainly on the club's youngsters this year. However, the start of the season has certainly not reassured ASSE fans: their team has only three points from five rounds and is still waiting for its first win. After draws against Lorient, Lens and Lille, there were clear defeats against Marseille and Montpellier, leaving the traditional club in 19th place in the table. 

Bordeaux are not much better off. They were threatened by relegation at times last year, but managed to avert the crisis and finished the league in 12th place, five points from the drop. The next crisis, however, came shortly after the season when the club was temporarily relegated to Ligue 2 due to finances. Eventually, however, a new owner was found who, in addition to a number of reinforcements, also brought in a new manager in Vladimir Petkovic from the Swiss national team. However, the Sarajevo native is not having a great start to his new job: Bordeaux have only two points from five rounds, with draws against Marseille and Angers. The result is the last place in the table, one point behind Saint-Étienne.

Both teams are still waiting for their first clean sheet of the season, Bordeaux even has the worst defence in the league with 12 goals conceded. However, it must be taken into account that this is a crucial game for both teams and one they cannot afford to lose.
